On August 27th, 2025, Rotary Club of Bakersfield Twilight welcomed Erika Noel, Senior Biologist at Mccormick Biological!

Erika talked about her extensive experience studying bats and introduced the club to the Pallid Bat!

She explained how the habitat of the Pallid Bat (also the state bat of California), which spans the entirety of all biome types, including deserts to coastal areas and caves, are actually immune to the venom of scorpions, notably the Arizona Bark Scorpion which is the most venomous scorpion in North America!  Bats also act as a natural source of pest control and also contribute to pollination due to their love of Nectar and Cactus Fruit.  Amazing!

They are of course being negatively affected by pesticide as that denies them a food source and also affects their overall health.  Stop using it guys!
