Rotary  Meeting;   September 15, 2010

It was like a night in Casablanca.

It was 5:45 pm and the usual Twilighters were in the bar.

[Rick:  "You're lucky the bar is open to you."]

The clock was ticking toward start time.

[German banker: "We have something to look forward to."]

President CAROL SMITH approached the podium to commence the activities,  and rang the bell.

[Rick: "Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine."]

The roster crew, including SANDY FOSTER, ALMA LUERA, AMY SMITH, and BEE BARMANN did their thing.  Guest GINA HILL already felt at home, having endured the Ethics Committee.

[Captain Renault: "Round up the usual suspects."]

PRESIDENT CAROL moved right into introducing GEORGE MARTIN as the presenter of the night's program: a history and description of the upcoming business conference.

[Rick:  "Now, you've got to listen to me! You have any idea what you'd have to look forward to if you stayed here?]

GEORGE MARTIN provided a discussion of a portion of his history and that of the Bakersfield Business Conference.  This year's event, after a five-year hiatus, was inspired in part by his mother-in-law.  George offered a description of the event's agenda, which as usual includes a totally impressive list of speakers.  Possibly most impressive to Twilighters will be the presence of a Ferris Wheel and Carousel. George concluded the program by stating the benefits the conference has given and will give to image of our great community.

[Rick: "Last night we said a great many things."]

We then sang Happy Birthday to ANDREW FISHKIN in honor of the anniversary of his birth on September 16.

[Rick: "I'm a drunkard."]

LOUISE WEBER and spouse, CRAIG, celebrated their anniversary on September 3.

[Sam singing: "You must remember this/ A kiss is still a kiss."]

JIM BELL presented to President Carol the banner he obtained from the Kelowna Rotary Club during his momentous bike ride to Canada.

[Captain Renault: "This is the end of the chase."]

After the meeting, there was an ad hoc convening of some existing and potential members of the Ethics Committee at the Padre Hotel.

[Sam: "Ain't you planning on going to bed in the near future?" Rick: "No."]
